Dahi or curd or yogurt is very important in any Indian household and in the Hindu homes, the cow is in fact worshipped (in good old days every household used to have at least one cow which they used to take care of well for the milk it would yield). Krishna the Indian God was brought up as a cowherd and he is always depicted with cows and or Gopis around him!! And no wonder he loved butter and curd and used to steal and it as a little boy and was aptly called a "Makhan chor" meaning "Butter thief" (literally).
And here's what a pot of yoghurt means in India on Krishna's birthday. Krishna is one of the most favourite Gods of Indian Hindus.
Dahi Handi( earthen pot with curd/yoghurt), is the most celebrated aspect of Janmashtami/Krishna's birthday . It is celebrated amidst revelry recalling the little Krishna scrambling upon his friends who form a human pyramid to reach the Dahi(Curd)Pot.The Gopis (cowherd women) used to hang pots of curd and butter at a height in their houses to save it from the mischievous little Krishna who loved all of it! And Krishna his friends got what they wanted nevertheless!
In remembrance, on Krishna Jayanthi (Krishna's birthday)a pot with the mixture of curd, milk, dry fruits, ghee etc is hung by the means of a rope about 20-30 feet high. Contestants form a human pyramid to get their hands on the desired pot. It is definitely a challenging game to get hold of it as eager contestants make their way up to it, water is sprayed on them continuously by the onlookers to distract them and the rope by which the pot is hanging is shaken too. The group which manages to break the pot wins the prize money.
Dahi Handi though portrays the playful and adoringly mischievous attitude of Krishna, it also carries a profound philosophy behind it. The pot is the ego or the sense of the body mind identification that dangles in the grasp of Samsara (the cycle of death and rebirth to which life in the material world is bound) The butter or Dahi which forms the content is embodied as the essence, or the being. The Lord breaks the pot or the ego to release the content from the binding Samsara. His eagerness to savor it reveals the bliss that one enjoys on realizing the true essence or the true self. It can also be taken as the Lord's instruction to break the body mind complex which is portrayed as the pot to attain true bliss on realizing the essence, the true self, portrayed as the contents of the pot. However to break the illusion of the body mind complex is not an easy task as one will have to focus steadfastly on realizing the essence or the ultimate with devotion. Distractions from around disturbs one from attaining the truth, however one pointed focus and devotion to the Lord will ultimately lead one to the goal of ultimate bliss and freedom from the cycle of birth and death.
